Aims

JMPCC aims to improve the safety and outcomes of patients undergoing surgery and those with critical illness by publishing rigorous, clinically useful research and education across anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and critical care.

Scope

•     Preoperative assessment and optimisation: risk stratification, prehabilitation, anaemia management, frailty, fasting and comorbidity management.

•     Anaesthesia: general and regional anaesthesia, airway management, paediatric, obstetric, cardiac, neuro- and day-care anaesthesia, pharmacology of anaesthetic agents, and monitoring.

•     Intraoperative care: haemodynamic management, fluid therapy, blood transfusion and patient blood management, ventilation strategies and temperature management.

•     Postoperative care and recovery: enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), postoperative complications, delirium, nausea and vomiting, high-dependency care and rapid response systems.

•     Pain medicine: acute postoperative pain, opioid-sparing strategies, chronic post-surgical pain and interventional pain procedures.

•     Critical care medicine: sepsis and septic shock, ARDS and mechanical ventilation, acute kidney injury, nutrition, sedation, neurocritical care, trauma, burns, toxicology and paediatric and neonatal intensive care.

•     Emergency medicine and resuscitation: cardiac arrest, advanced life support, shock, and pre-hospital and emergency department critical care.

•     Point-of-care ultrasound and technology: POCUS, monitoring devices, and digital and AI-based decision support in the operating room and ICU.

•     Infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship in surgical and intensive care settings.

•     Patient safety, quality and systems of care: critical incidents, checklists, human factors, ICU organisation, staffing, education and simulation.

•     Ethics and end-of-life care: decision-making, palliative care in the ICU, communication with families and organ donation.

•     Critical care nursing and allied health: nursing care, physiotherapy, early mobilisation and post-ICU rehabilitation.

•     Surgical technique papers without an anaesthetic, perioperative or critical care dimension.

•     Laboratory or animal studies with no clear link to clinical perioperative or critical care practice.

•     Case reports that describe well-known conditions or complications without new learning.
